Fire Hydrant System Cost in India: What Drives It and a BOQ Structure You Can Reuse
The cost of a fire hydrant system in India follows seven drivers: water storage, pump duty, ring main length, hydrant count, civil work, power supply and standby, and testing and approvals. No price per square foot holds across sites, so cost the drivers from a design and compare bids on one BOQ.
Why a hydrant system has no standard price
Two factories of the same floor area can need very different systems. One is a single shed with a low hazard class and a short external ring. The other is a multi-block plant with storage of combustibles, a long ring on rocky ground and a tank sized for a long fire-fighting duration. We do not publish a rupee-per-square-foot figure for hydrant systems, and we would not trust one that comes without a design. What is published and checkable is the code framework that sets the quantities. Once the quantities are fixed, price is a matter of material, make and labour, which a BOQ lets you compare.
What the National Building Code fixes
Table 7 of Part 4 of the National Building Code of India 2016 sets minimum fire-fighting installations by occupancy. The table sets the pump set sizes at 1,620, 2,280 or 2,850 litres per minute for the classes in the table, with a 180 litres per minute pump for pressure maintenance. It requires 3.5 kg/cm² at the remotest location, and states that one set of pumps is provided for every 100 hydrants or part thereof, to a maximum of two sets. A note allows an additional diesel pump of the same capacity, with the water tank doubled, as an alternative to an extra pump set. For hazardous buildings, the table asks for fire-fighting requirements of a minimum of 240 minutes.
Two notes matter most for factories. The table says its requirements for industrial buildings are for small-scale industry units, and that for other industries the requirements are worked out from the relevant Indian Standards and in consultation with the local fire authority. And it notes that dry risers may be used in hilly and industrial areas as the local authority requires. In plain terms: for a larger factory the code gives a framework and your fire department's view fixes the figures. Our Fire NOC assistance and the Fire NOC guide for Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh cover that step.
The seven drivers, in order of impact
| Driver | What moves the cost | What to ask the bidder |
|---|---|---|
| Water storage | Tank volume from hazard class and fire duration; RCC civil work, dewatering, make-up source | What volume, on what basis, and is the civil work in the price? |
| Pumps | Duty (flow and head), electric plus diesel standby plus jockey, number of sets, panel and starter | What is the duty point and the make, and what is the standby arrangement? |
| Ring main | Length, diameter, pipe class, underground or above ground, coating, road crossings, thrust blocks | What is the total length, class and coating? |
| Hydrants and hose points | Number and type of yard hydrants, landing valves, hose boxes, hose reels, monitors | How many, and where, as shown on the Fire NOC drawing? |
| Civil and pump room | Foundations, pump room, ventilation, drainage, fuel storage for the diesel set | Is it in the fire contractor's scope? |
| Power and standby | Dedicated feeder, cable, DG backup, earthing | Who supplies the cable from the main panel? |
| Testing and approvals | Hydrostatic test, flow test, drawings, Fire NOC, inspection visits | Who files, who pays, and what is the test plan? |
Water storage and the ring main usually dominate. Tank volume comes from hazard class and the duration the system must run, and size the pumps with it; our fire water tank calculator and fire pump room calculator show the method. The ring main depends on the plot: an irregular plot or a long run to a far block adds pipe, valves and trenching for no extra protection.
A BOQ structure you can reuse
Copy the structure below into a spreadsheet and ask every bidder to price the same lines. It follows the subsystem split in our fire fighting BOQ guide but is limited to the hydrant system.
| Section | Typical lines | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| A. Storage | Underground tank (civil), level indicator, inlet and overflow, make-up line, valves | kl, no. |
| B. Pump room | Main electric pump, diesel pump with fuel tank, jockey pump, manifold, panel, base frames, vibration mounts | set, no. |
| C. Piping | Ring main by diameter and class, risers, valves, strainers, NRVs, supports, coating and wrapping, trenching, thrust blocks | m, no. |
| D. Hydrants and hose points | Yard hydrants, landing valves, hose pipes, branch pipes, hose boxes, hose reels, signage | no. |
| E. Power | Feeder cable, glands, earthing, DG interface, controls | m, no. |
| F. Civil and finishing | Pump room works, valve chambers, road crossings, painting and colour coding | lump sum or m, no. |
| G. Testing and handover | Hydro test, flushing, pump performance test, hydrant flow test, as-built drawings, manuals | lump sum, set |
| H. Approvals | Fire NOC drawings, fees, inspection support | lump sum |
Sections F and G are the lines most often missed. Section C is where quotes diverge, because pipe class and coating are easy to reduce quietly. Ask for the class and the standard on every pipe line. The hydrant pressure test entry explains what the test should show.
Ways the number goes wrong
- Sizing for phase one only. Pumps and tank sized for the first block cost more when replaced. Size the pump room and tank for the full build-out and extend the ring later.
- Copying a neighbour's quote. Hazard class, area and plot shape differ. Quantities come from your drawing.
- Leaving out civil and power. A pump price without the pump room, foundations, feeder and DG interface is not a system price.
- Approval drawing and BOQ not matching. A drawing approved by the fire authority and a BOQ that prices something smaller is a classic gap.
How Secured Engineers helps
Fire fighting is one of the disciplines we design and build, and we file the Fire NOC application ourselves. Design is done in-house, and Fire NOC, CEIG and DISCOM net-metering applications are filed in-house, so the drawing the fire department approves and the BOQ you tender come from the same set. Mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire and solar work can sit under one contract. We work from offices in Noida (Delhi NCR) and Ludhiana, with 535+ projects across 18+ states and 89.77% repeat clients. The details of our hydrant and wet riser work are on our hydrant and wet riser systems page.
If you hold a Fire NOC drawing, a quotation or a BOQ, send it and we will review the file: the design basis, the sizes, the scope split and the missing lines. Message us on WhatsApp, call +91 70099 85817, or ask for a free proposal.
Frequently asked
What is the cost of a fire hydrant system per square foot in India?
No per-square-foot figure holds across sites, because cost follows hazard class, water storage, pump duty, ring main length and civil conditions rather than floor area alone. We do not publish one. Get the design basis first, then ask bidders to price one BOQ and compare the section totals.
What pump capacity does a hydrant system need?
The NBC Part 4 Table 7 lists pump sets of 1,620, 2,280 and 2,850 litres per minute for its building classes, with a 180 litres per minute pressure-maintenance pump and 3.5 kg/cm² at the remotest point. For industrial buildings beyond small-scale units, the requirement is worked out with the relevant standards and the local fire authority.
Is a hydrant system mandatory for every factory?
Not in every case. Requirements depend on the state fire rules, the building height and area, the occupancy and hazard class. The code table itself treats industrial requirements as a starting point and refers larger industries to the Indian Standards and the local fire authority. Confirm with your fire department before you design.
How can I reduce the cost of a hydrant system safely?
Do not reduce the design basis. Reduce waste instead: size tank and pumps for the final build-out so they are not replaced, plan a compact ring on the plot, compare bids on one BOQ, and make sure civil, power and testing are included in each quotation so the first price is the final price.
What should I send to get a hydrant quotation reviewed?
Send the Fire NOC drawing or layout, the area and height of each building, the storage and process hazards, any existing fire water arrangement and every quotation you hold. A reviewer can then check the sizes, the missing lines such as civil work and testing, and whether the approved drawing and the BOQ describe the same scope.
