EV charging station installation — sized against your building's real electrical headroom
EV charging station installation is sold as a product: a charger, a cable, a socket. Every charger is also a sustained new load on a transformer, panels and cables sized years ago for a building without EV charging in the plan. We install EV charging the way an electrical contractor should — load study first, a dedicated EV distribution board, then the chargers — for factories, offices, hotels, hospitals and parking.

Why EV charging retrofits trip breakers
One charger rarely causes a problem. The tenth, added the same way as the first — one request at a time, with no cumulative load study — is where buildings start tripping during the evening peak, when parked cars charge at the hour the rest of the building draws its maximum.
- No cumulative load tracking — each request is checked for a spare circuit, not against the building's total headroom
- Diversity ignored — several vehicles charging together can draw close to full rated capacity, unlike lighting or general power
- Transformer headroom never verified — a transformer sized tightly for the original building has little spare for a new load category
- Convenient, not correct, cable routes — chargers hung on the nearest panel instead of a planned EV board
The longer version is in our guide to EV charging retrofits and parking load.
What an EV charging load study covers
| Step | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Existing load audit | Actual — not nameplate — peak demand, from billing data and panel-level metering |
| Available headroom | Real spare transformer and panel capacity after the existing load and its growth margin |
| Charging demand model | A realistic simultaneous-charging assumption for your parking count and EV uptake |
| Distribution design | Dedicated EV panels with a correctly sized incoming feeder |
| Phasing plan | How many chargers fit now, and which need a transformer or panel upgrade first |
Commercial EV charging installation — what we install
- Load study and phasing plan, before any charger is bought
- Transformer, LT panel or feeder upgrades where the study says they are needed — part of our electrical contracting scope
- A dedicated EV distribution board with its own correctly sized feeder
- Cabling, containment and earthing to the charger positions
- Installation, testing and commissioning of the chargers you select
- Sub-metering per charger for multi-tenant and CAM-charged buildings
- Fire, ventilation and detection review for basement and enclosed parking
- Power-factor check — a charger bank can move the building's PF and its penalty exposure
- Charger load added to the solar and DG capacity planning
- DISCOM load-enhancement and electrical-inspectorate submissions prepared and filed where they apply — the authorities decide
Charger make, warranty and the app or billing platform are agreed with you at the brief stage; we engineer the supply side and install to the charger maker's requirements.
EV charging for hotels, offices and factories
Hotels and hospitality
Guest charging usually lands in the basement — so the fire, ventilation and detection review matters as much as the feeder. Metered per charger if the charging is billed.
Offices and commercial buildings
Tenant requests arrive one at a time; the building needs a plan for all of them. New buildings can reserve the capacity at design stage instead of retrofitting it.
Factories, warehouses and fleets
Fleet and staff charging shares a transformer with process load — and a solar carport can put the generation over the vehicles.
Electrical infrastructure on our project record
These are electrical-infrastructure projects from our published record — the distribution, panels and approvals an EV charging installation plugs into. None of them is recorded as an EV charging project.

EV charging installation — straight answers
How much electrical capacity does an EV charger need?
It depends on the charger. Our EV charging load calculator starts from AC chargers at 7.4 kW and 22 kW and an entry-level DC fast charger at 30 kW — DC fast and ultra-fast chargers run far higher. The building-level number is not the sum of the nameplates: it is the charger mix multiplied by a realistic simultaneity factor, added to your existing peak demand.
Will we need a transformer upgrade for EV charging?
Not always. It depends on the real headroom left after your existing peak demand and its growth margin, and on a realistic simultaneous-charging assumption for your parking. The load study answers it, and the phasing plan tells you how many chargers fit now and which charger number needs a transformer or panel upgrade first.
Can EV chargers go in a basement car park?
Yes, with the fire risk designed for. Charging in an enclosed basement changes the fire risk profile of that parking and ventilation zone, so charger placement, ventilation and detection are planned for it specifically rather than treated as a generic electrical addition to a space that is already approved.
How is EV charging billed in a multi-tenant building?
Meter each charger. Unmetered or flat-rate charging in a CAM-charged building creates the same allocation disputes as shared DG backup; sub-metering per charger settles who used what before the argument starts.
Can EV charging run on rooftop solar?
Solar can offset charging energy during the day, and a solar carport puts generation directly over the parking. The charger load still has to be included in the solar and DG capacity planning — it is not a parallel, unrelated addition.
Does an EV charging installation need approvals?
Where the charging load takes you past your sanctioned load, a load enhancement with the DISCOM applies, and changes to an HT installation go to the electrical inspectorate. We prepare and file those submissions and follow them up; the DISCOM and the inspectorate decide.
