Fire Pump Room
A fire pump room is the dedicated space housing the main fire pump, a standby pump on an independent power source, and a jockey pump — the machinery that pressurises hydrant and sprinkler systems from the static tank.
Why it matters on an MEPF project
The pump set is the heart of every water-based fire system, and the code treats the room accordingly: adequate size and access for maintenance, proper suction arrangement from the static tank (positive suction being strongly preferred), drainage, and a standby pump that does not share the failure mode of the main — which in practice means a diesel-driven standby where mains power runs the primary.
This is also the room the final NOC inspection lingers in: auto-start on pressure drop demonstrated live, pump duty against the performance curve, jockey holding pressure, and the priming/suction behaviour with the tank at low level. A beautiful network behind a bad pump room still fails.

Common mistakes
- Room sized for installation, not maintenance — no space to pull a pump.
- Diesel standby with a starved or stale fuel arrangement, discovered during the inspection run.
- Suction lift arrangements that lose prime exactly when the tank runs low.
- Auto-start disabled "to stop nuisance runs" — the pump room equivalent of unplugging the alarm.

Why a diesel standby if the building has a DG set?
The fire scheme wants a standby whose failure is independent of the building electrical system — a dedicated diesel-driven fire pump does not care what state the switchboards or the DG changeover are in during a fire.
