Fire Extinguisher Rating
A fire extinguisher rating states which fire classes the unit can fight — A (solids), B (liquids), C (gases), D (metals), F (cooking oils) — and its tested capacity, with selection and distribution governed by IS 2190.
Why it matters on an MEPF project
Extinguishers are the first-response layer, and the wrong type is worse than none: water on an oil pan or a live panel converts a small fire into an incident. Class coverage must match the hazard in each area — ABC dry powder as the general workhorse, CO₂ near electrical rooms, Class F where commercial cooking happens, Class D only where specific metal hazards exist.
IS 2190 governs selection, quantity and placement — travel-distance to the nearest unit, mounting, signage — and the maintenance cycle: monthly visual checks, periodic servicing, hydrostatic testing on schedule. The inspection question is never "do you have extinguishers"; it is "are they the right ones, in date, where the code wants them".
How it's specified in practice
| Parameter | Typical / working position | Governing reference |
|---|---|---|
| Class A (wood, paper, textiles) | Water / foam / ABC powder | IS 2190 selection |
| Class B (flammable liquids) | Foam / ABC powder / CO₂ | IS 2190 |
| Class C (gases) & electrical vicinity | CO₂ / dry powder (non-conductive) | IS 2190 |
| Class F (kitchen oils) | Wet-chemical type | IS 2190 |
Common mistakes
- One ABC type everywhere, including the kitchen and the server room.
- Units present but out of service date — an automatic observation.
- Mounted behind stock, above reach, or missing signage.
- Nobody trained — the extinguisher works, the operator does not.

Frequently asked
How many extinguishers does my floor need?
IS 2190 works it from area, hazard class and travel distance to the nearest unit. Our fire-extinguisher calculator gives the count and mix per your inputs; the fire drawings formalise it.
Do extinguishers expire?
They require scheduled servicing, refilling after any use, and periodic hydrostatic testing per IS 2190 — the service label carries the dates, and inspectors read those labels.
