Ethiopian Building Code Standard: what MEP teams should check
Ethiopian Building Code Standards (EBCS) are widely searched as PDF downloads, particularly the volumes covering electrical installation, ventilation and sanitary systems. Downloading a PDF is only the start. Check whether that copy is current and whether it is the one your project team and authority are working to.
A newer law sits above older standards
A summary of the Ethiopian Building Proclamation No. 1356/2024 describes a definition of design that includes electrical, mechanical and electro-mechanical work. Older EBCS volumes were issued under earlier legislation, so ask your local professional how the two relate on your project.
What to check on your project
- Standards: record the EBCS volume, edition and any international standards each discipline uses.
- Altitude: Addis Ababa sits at about 2,350 m, which affects generators, fans and cooling. State it in equipment selections.
- Power: confirm supply capacity and reliability in writing, and agree which loads need backup.
- Cold chain and agro-processing: record process temperatures and duty cycles early, because they usually drive plant size.
- Permits: confirm the route and required documents with the local building authority.
Check licensing before appointing
Ethiopia licenses and registers consulting practices. Rules for foreign firms should be confirmed with the relevant ministry or local counsel before an appointment, and local responsibilities should be named in writing.
