CEIG Approval

CEIG approval is the Electrical Inspectorate's statutory clearance — drawings approved and installation inspected — required before energising HT installations, transformers, DG sets and other specified electrical works under the CEA Safety Regulations 2023.

Why it matters on an MEPF project

Energising a covered installation without Inspectorate approval is the most consequential shortcut in industrial electrification: it exposes the occupier legally, voids the safety chain the 2023 Regulations construct, and surfaces at the worst moments — accidents, insurance claims, expansion applications. The regime is two-touch: drawing approval before construction/energisation, then physical inspection with test evidence.

Files bounce for predictable reasons: SLDs that disagree with reality, earthing designs without test values, protection settings unstated, missing test certificates for transformers and breakers. The inspector's checklist is knowable in advance — which is why a pre-audit of the file against it converts a multi-cycle ordeal into a single visit.

Common mistakes

  • Energising "temporarily" before approval — the word does not exist in the regime.
  • Submitting the consultant's SLD while site reality has moved on.
  • Earthing shown on drawings but never measured for the file.
  • Treating each addition (new DG, solar) as exempt because the original was approved.

Frequently asked

How long does CEIG approval take?

Preparation is days-to-weeks if records exist; authority stages vary by state workload. The controllable variable is a first-time-complete file — our readiness checker walks the same checklist the inspector uses.

Does a rooftop solar plant need CEIG?

Above state-specified capacity thresholds, yes — as part of interconnection. Below them, the DISCOM process alone may suffice. Check your state's current practice; we verify it per project.
