ETP (Effluent Treatment Plant)

An effluent treatment plant treats industrial process wastewater whose chemistry varies by industry — oils, metals, dyes, COD/BOD loads — through a treatment train designed from effluent characterisation, to meet SPCB discharge or reuse norms.

Why it matters on an MEPF project

An STP treats predictable domestic sewage; an ETP treats whatever your process makes, and no two are alike. Design starts from characterisation — flow, pH, COD/BOD, TSS, oil & grease, specific contaminants — and assembles a train (equalisation, physico-chemical, biological, tertiary) to hit the consent's discharge norms. Copying a neighbour's ETP is how plants meet their first show-cause notice.

The regulatory weight is heavier than sewage: consents specify parameters and monitoring; several sectors carry online monitoring obligations; and Zero Liquid Discharge directions in stressed clusters change the economics entirely. The ETP is also an operating plant — chemicals, sludge handling and trained operators — not a civil structure you commission and forget.

STP vs ETP — do I need both?

If you generate both domestic sewage and process effluent, commonly yes — or a carefully engineered combined scheme where chemistry permits. Consents typically address them distinctly.

What is ZLD and does it apply to me?

Zero Liquid Discharge — no liquid effluent leaves the site; everything is recovered or evaporated. It applies where SPCB/CPCB directions impose it (certain sectors and stressed clusters) and reshapes both capex and opex materially.
