HVAC
HVAC — Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning — is the mechanical discipline that controls a building's temperature, humidity, fresh-air supply, exhaust and pressure relationships. In India it is dominated by cooling, and the plant is sized from a heat-load calculation, not from floor area.
Why it matters on an MEPF project
HVAC is where most Indian commercial and industrial buildings spend the largest share of their energy and earn the largest share of their complaints, and both usually trace to the same decision: the load. A plant sized from a square-foot ratio is wrong in one of two expensive directions; a plant sized from the envelope, the occupancy, the equipment and the fresh air is a design.
Ventilation is the part of HVAC the code cares about most: staircase pressurisation, basement and car-park smoke control, kitchen exhaust and fresh air are life-safety and statutory requirements under NBC 2016, checked at the fire inspection — not options to be value-engineered out.
How it's specified in practice
| Parameter | Typical / working position | Governing reference |
|---|---|---|
| Chilled water | Central chillers, pumps, AHUs — large buildings, process loads | Selection by load profile; ECBC efficiency where notified |
| VRF / VRV | Zoned comfort cooling without a plant room — offices, hotels, clinics | Manufacturer piping limits |
| Ventilation | Fresh air, exhaust, pressurisation, jet fans | NBC 2016 Parts 4 and 8 |
| Precision / cleanroom | Tight temperature, humidity and particle control | ISO 14644; GMP |
Common mistakes
- Sizing from a square-foot ratio instead of a heat-load calculation.
- Choosing VRF for high-latent or continuous process loads.
- Skipping TAB and treating "it cools" as commissioned.
- Leaving plant-room and shaft space undecided until after the structure is cast.

Frequently asked
How is HVAC capacity calculated?
From a heat-load calculation — envelope and orientation, glazing, occupancy, lighting and equipment, fresh air and the outdoor design conditions — summed room by room to a cooling load in TR. The plant type follows from the load profile as much as from the number.
Is ventilation part of HVAC?
Yes — the V. Fresh air, exhaust and pressurisation are HVAC scope, and several of them are statutory: stair pressurisation and car-park smoke control are checked at the fire inspection.
