What changes at 250 kW

The engineering story at this size

250 kW is where solar stops being a facilities purchase and becomes an electrical project. Mid-size factories, large cold stores, hospitals and hotel campuses land here. The economics are the same per kW as a 100 kW plant, but two new questions appear: whether your sanctioned load permits the full capacity under your DISCOM's net-metering cap, and whether your existing transformer can absorb reverse flow at Sunday-afternoon minimum load.

Grid interconnection

The crossover size: still viable on an upgraded LT connection in some cases, but usually HT-side (11 kV) once your sanctioned load and transformer capacity are checked — which is exactly the check most quotes at this size skip.

Inverter architecture

Typically 4–6 string inverters (50–60 kW class). Still small enough that a single inverter failure is a manageable 20% loss, large enough that monitoring stops being optional.

Approvals

⚠ Sanctioned-load ceiling

Most DISCOMs cap net-metered capacity at or near sanctioned load. A 250 kW plant on a 200 kW sanction is the single most common stall at this size — check headroom before design, not after quoting.

⚠ Transformer reverse flow

At 250 kW your existing transformer must absorb generation minus minimum load. Weekend and holiday shutdowns are the stress case, and they are when most plants first trip.

⚠ Roof spread across blocks

25,000 sq.ft is rarely one clean roof — expect 2–4 sheds, which adds DC cable runs, combiner design and walkway planning that a per-kW quote may not include.

How much does 250 kW generate?

Roughly 30,000 units a month in the northern belt (~120 units/kW/month; higher in Rajasthan and Gujarat, lower in the East and North East), with real seasonal swing — summers above, the winter fog window materially below. At a ₹9/unit blended tariff that is about ₹2.5–2.7 lakh a month offset, provided your daytime load absorbs it.

How much roof does 250 kW need?

About 25,000 sq.ft shadow-free, usually spread across several shed blocks. Skylights, vents and inter-block shadows typically remove 10–20% of the paper area, so a shadow study is what turns the brochure figure into your real one.

Does a 250 kW plant need CEIG approval?

In most states yes — at this size you are generally HT-connected or crossing the threshold where the Chief Electrical Inspector's approval and synchronisation permission apply, alongside DISCOM net-metering or captive registration. We file both in-house.
