Code Checklist
ECBC 2017 Compliance Checklist
ECBC 2017 (BEE) applies to larger commercial buildings (by connected load / contract demand — verify the threshold and your State's notified version). Decisions on envelope and orientation are architectural, so engage with it at schematic stage.
- ECBC 2017 · Energy Conservation Building Code 2017 (Bureau of Energy Efficiency)
- State ECBC · State-notified ECBC (where adopted/amended)
Tiers & compliance route
- Target a tier: ECBC, ECBC+ or SuperECBC (increasing energy performance).
- Choose a compliance route: Prescriptive, or the Whole-Building Performance (WBP) simulation route.
- Account for the building's climate zone (India's five zones: Hot-Dry, Warm-Humid, Composite, Temperate, Cold).
Building envelope
- Wall and roof assembly U-values / insulation within ECBC limits for the climate zone.
- Window-to-wall ratio, glazing SHGC and U-value, and shading addressed for orientation.
- Cool/high-reflectance roof where applicable.
HVAC & lighting
- HVAC equipment efficiency (COP / IPLV) meets ECBC minimums; controls and economisers where required.
- Lighting Power Density (LPD) within ECBC limits, with daylight and occupancy controls.
Mandatory provisions
- Mandatory renewable-energy provision (e.g. solar) as required by ECBC for the building.
- Metering / sub-metering of major energy end-uses.
Verify — ECBC applicability thresholds, tier requirements and numeric limits depend on the State-notified version and the climate zone. Confirm against ECBC 2017 (and your State ECBC) with an energy/MEP consultant.
