Plumbing & Public Health Specifications

Tender-ready public-health-engineering specifications tagged to the governing Indian plumbing codes. Demand figures, pipe sizing, pump duty and STP capacity are project-specific and flagged for your PHE consultant.

  • IS 2065 · Code of Practice for Water Supply in Buildings
  • IS 1172 · Code of Basic Requirements for Water Supply, Drainage and Sanitation
  • NBC 2016 Part 9 · National Building Code of India — Plumbing Services
  • UPC-I · Uniform Plumbing Code India (IAPMO / Indian Plumbing Association; current ed. UIPC-I)
  • IS 1742 · Code of Practice for Building Drainage
  • CPHEEO Manual · CPHEEO Manual on Sewerage and Sewage Treatment (Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs)
  • CPCB Norms · Central Pollution Control Board — Sewage/Effluent Discharge Standards

Drafting aid, not a stamped design. Every specification below is a starting point for your tender. Project-specific design values must be confirmed by a licensed engineer against the current code editions and the local authority before issue.

Domestic Water Supply

  • IS 2065 — Code of Practice for Water Supply in Buildings
  • IS 1172 — Code of Basic Requirements for Water Supply, Drainage and Sanitation
  • NBC 2016 Part 9 — National Building Code of India — Plumbing Services
  • UPC-I — Uniform Plumbing Code India (IAPMO / Indian Plumbing Association; current ed. UIPC-I)
What the code requires

IS 1172 sets per-capita water demand and fixture provision; IS 2065 / NBC Part 9 / UPC-I govern pipe sizing, materials, storage and distribution.

Tender-ready specification
The domestic water-supply system shall be designed, installed and tested in accordance with IS 2065 (Code of Practice for Water Supply in Buildings), IS 1172, the National Building Code of India 2016, Part 9, and UPC-I.

Water demand and storage (underground + overhead) shall be derived from the per-capita demand and occupancy basis of IS 1172. Pipe sizing shall satisfy the design flow and residual pressure at the most-remote/most-hydraulically-disadvantaged fixture per IS 2065 / NBC Part 9. Materials shall be of approved make suitable for potable water, with isolation, metering and pressure management as required.

Verify before issue — Per-capita demand, storage volumes and pipe sizes are occupancy-specific — confirm against IS 1172 / IS 2065 (current editions), NBC Part 9 and local water-authority byelaws.

Drainage & Sanitation

  • IS 1742 — Code of Practice for Building Drainage
  • NBC 2016 Part 9 — National Building Code of India — Plumbing Services (Drainage & Sanitation)
  • IS 1172 — Code of Basic Requirements for Water Supply, Drainage and Sanitation
What the code requires

IS 1742 / NBC Part 9 govern soil, waste and vent pipe sizing, gradients, traps and the two-pipe/single-stack system selection; IS 1172 sets minimum sanitary fixture provision.

Tender-ready specification
The drainage and sanitation system shall be designed, installed and tested in accordance with IS 1742 (Code of Practice for Building Drainage), the National Building Code of India 2016, Part 9, and IS 1172.

Soil, waste and vent stacks and branches shall be sized and graded for the fixture-unit loading per IS 1742 / NBC Part 9, with adequate venting to protect trap seals and accessible clean-outs/inspection points. Below-ground drainage shall be laid to the required gradient with manholes/chambers. Materials shall be of approved make. Minimum sanitary appliance provision shall follow IS 1172 for the occupancy.

Verify before issue — Stack/branch sizes, venting, gradients and fixture counts are project-specific — confirm against IS 1742 / NBC Part 9 (current editions) and local byelaws.

Pumps & Hydro-Pneumatic System

  • IS 2065 — Code of Practice for Water Supply in Buildings
  • NBC 2016 Part 9 — National Building Code of India — Plumbing Services
What the code requires

Pump duty (flow and head) is derived from the building demand and the index-circuit head loss; hydro-pneumatic/booster systems maintain pressure per IS 2065 / NBC Part 9.

Tender-ready specification
Water-supply pumps and the hydro-pneumatic/booster system shall be selected, installed, tested and commissioned in accordance with IS 2065 and the National Building Code of India 2016, Part 9.

Pump duty (flow and head) shall be derived from the peak design demand and the calculated head loss along the index circuit, with duty/standby configuration and a variable-speed booster set where pressure management is required. Pumps shall be of approved make, on anti-vibration mounts, with suction/delivery isolation, NRVs and a control panel interfaced to level/pressure sensing.

Verify before issue — Pump flow, head and duty/standby configuration are project-specific — to be calculated by the PHE engineer against IS 2065 / NBC Part 9.

Sewage Treatment Plant (STP)

  • CPHEEO Manual — CPHEEO Manual on Sewerage and Sewage Treatment (Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs)
  • CPCB Norms — Central Pollution Control Board — Sewage/Effluent Discharge Standards
  • NBC 2016 Part 9 — National Building Code of India — Plumbing Services
What the code requires

STP capacity follows the sewage generation (a fraction of water demand) per the CPHEEO manual; treated-water quality must meet the CPCB discharge/reuse standards current at the time.

Tender-ready specification
The sewage treatment plant shall be designed, installed, tested and commissioned in accordance with the CPHEEO Manual on Sewerage and Sewage Treatment, the applicable CPCB discharge/reuse standards, and the National Building Code of India 2016, Part 9.

STP capacity shall be derived from the design sewage flow (assessed from water demand per the CPHEEO manual) with suitable peak factors. The treatment process shall produce treated water meeting the CPCB standards for the intended disposal/reuse (e.g. flushing, landscape), with disinfection, sludge handling, odour control and online monitoring as required by the consent conditions.

Verify before issue — STP capacity, the treatment process and the required treated-water quality depend on occupancy and the State Pollution Control Board consent — confirm the latest CPCB/SPCB standards with the PHE engineer.
