Drafting aid, not a stamped design. Every specification below is a starting point for your tender. Project-specific design values must be confirmed by a licensed engineer against the current code editions and the local authority before issue.

LT Distribution & Wiring

  • IS 732 — Code of Practice for Electrical Wiring Installations
  • IEC 60364 — Low-Voltage Electrical Installations (BIS adopts part-by-part; IS 732 is the Indian wiring code)
  • CEA Safety Regulations — CEA (Measures relating to Safety and Electric Supply) Regulations, 2023
  • NBC 2016 Part 8 — National Building Code of India — Building Services (Electrical & Allied Installations)
What the code requires

IS 732 / IEC 60364 govern LT wiring design, protection coordination, disconnection times and conductor sizing; the CEA Safety Regulations are statutory for safety and clearances. Panels/assemblies follow IS/IEC 61439.

Tender-ready specification
The LT distribution and wiring installation shall be designed, installed, tested and commissioned in accordance with IS 732 (Code of Practice for Electrical Wiring Installations), IS/IEC 60364, the CEA (Measures relating to Safety and Electric Supply) Regulations 2023, and the National Building Code of India 2016, Part 8.

Main and sub-distribution boards shall be type-tested assemblies to IS/IEC 61439 of an approved make, with protective devices selected and discriminated for the prospective fault level and load schedule. Conductor and cable sizing shall satisfy current-carrying capacity, voltage drop and earth-fault loop/disconnection-time limits per IS 732 / IEC 60364. All metalwork shall be earthed per IS 3043.

Verify before issue — Load schedule, fault level, protection settings, discrimination and cable sizes are project-specific — to be calculated and confirmed by a licensed electrical engineer against IS 732 / IEC 60364 (current editions) and the CEA regulations.

Earthing System

  • IS 3043 — Code of Practice for Earthing
  • CEA Safety Regulations — CEA (Measures relating to Safety and Electric Supply) Regulations, 2023
What the code requires

IS 3043 governs the earthing design, electrode type and earth-resistance targets; the CEA Safety Regulations make earthing of installations statutory.

Tender-ready specification
The earthing system shall be designed, installed and tested in accordance with IS 3043 (Code of Practice for Earthing) and the CEA (Measures relating to Safety and Electric Supply) Regulations 2023.

Separate, clearly identified earthing shall be provided for system/neutral earthing and equipment/body earthing, with maintenance-free earth electrodes of approved type. The earth-electrode resistance and the overall earthing arrangement shall meet IS 3043 for the installation, with equipotential bonding of all extraneous-conductive parts. Earth-pit locations and test links shall be accessible for periodic testing.

Verify before issue — Target earth resistance, electrode count/type and conductor sizing depend on soil resistivity and fault level — confirm against IS 3043 (current edition) after a soil-resistivity survey.

Lightning Protection System

  • IS 2309 — Protection of Buildings and Allied Structures against Lightning — Code of Practice
  • NBC 2016 Part 8 — National Building Code of India — Building Services
What the code requires

IS 2309 sets whether a structure needs lightning protection (via a risk assessment) and the design of the air-termination, down-conductor and earth-termination network.

Tender-ready specification
The lightning protection system shall be designed and installed in accordance with IS 2309 (Protection of Buildings and Allied Structures against Lightning — Code of Practice) and the National Building Code of India 2016, Part 8.

The need for, and class of, protection shall be established by the risk assessment method of IS 2309 for the building's height, location and use. The air-termination network, down conductors and a dedicated low-resistance earth-termination shall be provided, bonded to the main earthing and to surge-protective devices (SPDs) on incoming services.

Verify before issue — The protection requirement and class follow from the IS 2309 risk assessment for the specific building — to be carried out by the electrical engineer; conventional air-termination methods are preferred over non-conventional/ESE devices unless justified.

DG Set & Standby Power

  • CEA Safety Regulations — CEA (Measures relating to Safety and Electric Supply) Regulations, 2023
  • CPCB Norms — Central Pollution Control Board — Emission & Noise Norms for DG Sets
  • NBC 2016 Part 8 — National Building Code of India — Building Services
What the code requires

DG rating follows the essential/standby load schedule; installation, synchronising and AMF follow CEA/NBC; emissions, stack height and acoustic enclosure follow current CPCB norms.

Tender-ready specification
The diesel generating set and standby power system shall be supplied, installed, tested and commissioned in accordance with the CEA (Measures relating to Safety and Electric Supply) Regulations 2023, the National Building Code of India 2016, Part 8, and the applicable CPCB emission and noise norms.

The DG rating (kVA) shall be derived from the essential/standby load schedule with diversity and future margin. The set shall include an acoustic enclosure, exhaust with the stack height required by CPCB, an AMF/synchronising panel as applicable, and a dedicated earthing and fuel system. Emissions shall meet the CPCB norms current at the time of installation.

Verify before issue — DG kVA, the essential-load schedule, stack height and the applicable CPCB emission tier are project- and date-specific — confirm the latest CPCB DG norms and CEA requirements with the electrical engineer.

Power & Control Cabling

  • IS 1554 — PVC Insulated (Heavy Duty) Electric Cables
  • IS 7098 — Crosslinked Polyethylene (XLPE) Insulated PVC Sheathed Cables
  • IS 732 — Code of Practice for Electrical Wiring Installations
What the code requires

Cable type and construction follow IS 1554 (PVC) / IS 7098 (XLPE); sizing, derating and routing follow IS 732 / IEC 60364. Fire-survival cable is required for life-safety circuits.

Tender-ready specification
Power and control cables shall conform to IS 1554 (PVC) or IS 7098 (XLPE) as applicable, of an approved make, and shall be selected, sized and installed in accordance with IS 732.

Cable sizes shall account for current-carrying capacity, grouping/derating factors, ambient temperature and voltage drop. Routing on cable trays/ladders, segregation of power and control/ELV, and fire-barrier sealing of penetrations shall be provided. Circuits serving fire and life-safety systems shall use fire-survival/fire-resistant cable of the rating required for the circuit function.

Verify before issue — Cable sizes, derating factors and fire-survival ratings are circuit-specific — to be calculated by the electrical engineer against IS 732 / IEC 60364 (current editions).
