Transformer Sizing (kVA)
Transformer sizing selects the kVA rating of your distribution transformer from realistic maximum demand — connected load shaped by diversity — plus growth margin, because the transformer is the hardest ceiling in your electrical system to raise later.
Why it matters on an MEPF project
The transformer is bought once and lived with for decades: undersize it and it runs hot, ages fast and caps every expansion; grossly oversize it and you pay iron losses and capital for headroom never used. The honest method starts from measured or computed maximum demand (not the sum of nameplates), applies engineering diversity, and adds a declared growth margin.
Sizing is entangled with statutory and network context: the rating drives your HT sanction, the CEIG substation file, fault levels downstream (which panel Icw must match), and standby philosophy (what the DG must carry). Loading practice matters too — transformers live longest run within sensible loading with good PF; chronic near-nameplate loading in a 46 °C summer is a slow bake.
