Electrical installation requirements in Kenya: what project teams should check
The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) regulates electrical installation work in Kenya. The Electric Power (Electrical Installation Work) Rules, 2006 have been the main instrument, and EPRA has published draft Energy (Electricity Supply and Installation Work) Regulations to align them with the Energy Act, 2019. Check the current status with EPRA before relying on either text.
Design and installation are separate responsibilities
A consultant can prepare the load schedule, single-line diagram, cable and protection calculations. Installation work is a separate, licensed activity. Name who designs, who installs, who tests and who certifies, because a gap between those roles usually surfaces late, when power is needed.
What to confirm before electrical design
- Supply: get capacity, metering and connection requirements from Kenya Power in writing, and record them as design inputs.
- Altitude: state site altitude in generator and equipment selections. Nairobi is at about 1,800 m and Mombasa is at sea level.
- Resilience: agree essential loads, standby generation or solar backup, and changeover with the owner.
- Licensing: have the installer confirm that their licence class covers the work.
- Handover: agree the test records and as-built drawings needed at completion.
