Fire Damper

A fire damper is an automatic closing device installed where ductwork penetrates a fire-rated wall or floor; on heat (fusible link) or signal it shuts, restoring the barrier the duct punched through so fire and smoke cannot travel the ductwork.

Why it matters on an MEPF project

HVAC ducts are highways through compartment walls: without dampers, every rated barrier a duct crosses is a hole. NBC 2016 Part 4's compartmentation logic therefore requires the barrier to be restored at each crossing — fire dampers for fire-rated boundaries, smoke dampers (or combined units) where the smoke-control strategy demands, with actuation tied into the detection system where specified.

Dampers are mechanical devices that seize when never exercised. Every damper needs an access panel (the detail fit-outs love to plaster over) and a periodic drop test on the maintenance calendar. A damper that cannot be reached cannot be tested; a damper never tested should be assumed stuck open.

Common mistakes

  • Ceilings closed over dampers with no access panels — untestable forever.
  • Dampers omitted where "the duct is small" — the rating does not care.
  • Fusible links painted over during redecoration.
  • Cause-and-effect never proven end-to-end with the alarm panel.

Fire damper vs smoke damper?

A fire damper restores a barrier's fire rating and typically shuts on heat; a smoke damper controls smoke migration and shuts on detection signal. Combined fire/smoke dampers do both — the fire scheme dictates which goes where.

How often should dampers be tested?

A periodic drop test — annually on rotation is common AMC practice — with results logged. The test also verifies the access panel still exists, which after a few fit-outs is not a given.
